Looking back on 20 years of fighting in the field of electronic products, we have come a long way. Processors are faster, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are brighter, memory density is greater, power consumption of everything is lower, and integrated circuits (ICs) integrate more components than ever before. For example, modern drones.




Although it was not brushed DC motor control that first came to mind when you recall the progress made in the field of electronic products, this technology has also been developed for many years. Brushed motors are distinguished by their smart internal construction that uses a constant external voltage to switch the current direction. The original system even operated with only the battery and the power switch, but it missed some useful features.

Several decades ago, to create a full-featured brushed motor driver, system designers had no choice but to use multiple discrete components. This includes a microcontroller, a number of gate drivers, several relays or metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) used to form the H-bridge, a sense resistor, an op amp circuit to amplify the sense voltage, and a A digital-to-analog converter (ADC) for measuring the detection voltage, a fuse for fault protection and a large number of passive components for various purposes. This method will allow the following functions:

  • Variable Speed Function: The H-Bridge provides a switch to pulse width modulate (PWM) the voltage applied to the motor, and the duty cycle directly controls the motor speed.
  • Bi-directional control: The H-bridge also allows you to bias a motor with either voltage polarity so that it can rotate in both directions.
  • Fail-safe function: The use of fuses is often the last resort, and the detection resistor provides a non-destructive way of measuring over-current.
  • Current control function: By disabling the H-bridge at any time, the sense resistor can also be used to regulate the current.
After years of development and evolution, all these functions (and other functions) have been integrated into a single piece of silicon. This not only allows IC designers to optimize analog circuits more efficiently in a closed system, but also allows you to perform tasks that you cannot accomplish in a discrete manner in an IC. For example, thousands of digital logic gates provide serial interfaces, robust breakdown protection, gate driver current control ("IDRIVE") functionality, fault reporting, and low power modes. In addition, the IC method can also provide field effect transistor (FET) VDS detection functions, a supply voltage monitor, and a local temperature sensor. The end result is that a stand-alone chip takes up very little board space, but it provides high reliability and makes life easier for system designers.

This integration has complemented advancements in analog process technology. As early as the 1990s, TI designed an early series BiCMOS process that uses the "state-of-the-art" 1μm feature size! Since then, our BiCMOS process node has undergone numerous iterations. Until 2015, this technology provided intensive digital logic, support for a wide range of voltages, and very low RDS(on) FETs per unit area. As more advanced nodes are about to emerge, these trends continue.

At present, some designers still use discrete motor circuits in high-current applications (this was previously done for cost and design reuse reasons). This year, we solved this space problem with our first full-bridge gate driver DRV8701. It is very cost-competitive and offers all the advantages of modern IC technology.

For smaller current brushed motors (up to 3.6A peak), we have just released the 8-pin DRV8871 series. The DRV8871 uses a breakthrough technology that detects and regulates motor currents without the need to sense resistors! This avoids power loss, thermal dissipation, board space, and cost issues associated with sense resistors. No other device in the world can match it today.
